When Sirena came to a dead stop, Keren’s stomach lurched and her hair wrapped around her face like a beehive.

“Welcome to my home,” Sirena said.

After disentangling herself from her swirling locks, Keren looked in awe at the building before her. No. Not a building. A majestic, four-story palace covered with gemstones.

Even though scant sunlight shone from above, the palace bathed the area in a mystical glow. A center tower, at least twenty stories high, ascended over the palace. Just like in fairy tales, it was solid up to the top, where one small window and a conical roof completed the structure. Surrounding the palace was a wall of glittering gold.

“This is beautiful,” Keren said. “Are those real gems?”

“Yes. My ancestors built the palace from treasure given to them by the elves after the Dragon War.”

As Keren’s pulse raced, she thought about Calypso’s research to locate the dragons’ stolen treasure. “The treasure was all individual gemstones?”

‘‘No. They removed the gems from the jewelry and art.” Sirena laughed. “Can you imagine how long that took?”

Keren whimpered as her heart pounded in her chest. “The parts that were left …” She spoke slowly to keep the panic out of her voice. “What happened to them?”

Sirena pointed to the palace. “See the windows and the lattice covering? They melted the parts down to make those and other art in the palace.”

A wave of dizziness swept over Keren. She put a hand to her forehead, trying to make sense of what Sirena said. Maybe she was jumping to unreasonable conclusions. The treasure used to make the palace might not have included Calypso and Gabriel’s.

“What’s wrong?” Sirena asked. “Are you having trouble breathing?”

Keren’s head spun imagining Dresdin’s Jewel and the Keys to the Ancients melting into molten steel. She had to keep it together.

“Nothing. I’m fine.” Keren closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Then she remembered the pictures in her pocket. She pulled them out and handed one to Sirena. “Have you seen this?”

After taking the disintegrating paper from Keren with only her index finger and thumb, Sirena held them up. “What is this?”

Keren frowned. “It’s a picture of something that I need to find.”

“No.” Sirena wrinkled her nose and waved the paper. “What is this? It’s disgusting.” Sirena pushed it toward Keren. “Take it back.”

“You mean paper?” Keren took the paper. Of course mermaids wouldn’t know about paper. “I’m talking about the picture.” She pointed to Dresdin’s Jewel. “Have you seen this? It’s called Dresdin’s Jewel. A friend of mine sent me to find it for him.”

Sirena squinted her eyes at the picture. “It looks familiar.” Then she shook her head. “I can’t remember.”

Keren sighed, then switched the papers. “How about this?”

With a frown, Sirena leaned closer. “That looks like my treasure chest.”

If Keren’s feet were touching the ground, she would have jumped for joy. “Where is it?”

“It’s in my room.” Sirena wrinkled her brow. “Why do you have a picture of my treasure chest?” Her eyes widened. “Are you here to steal it?”

Keren shook her head.
